The best new travel gadgets

THE best headphones for travellers, a tent you will never fail to find and jackets for all weather – here are the hottest gadgets right now.

D’Urban Travel Jacket

Price: $849

It might be heading towards summer in Australia, but anyone heading to the northern hemisphere for Christmas needs to rug up. Here are two fantastic men’s jackets  – one slightly formal and the other very casual chic.

The D’Urban Travel Jacket is light, stylish and dressed-up enough for any occasion. The wood-effect buttons and the red piping on the pockets give it a distinguished look.

Thankfully, it doesn’t crush in your bag. All you need to do is hang it up and the wrinkles disappear. There’s an inside zipper pocket on the left-hand side to keep your valuables safe. It is the perfect travel companion.

Icebreaker Kodiak Hood

Price: $349.95, Stockist icebreaker.com

The Icebreaker Kodiak Hood is 100 per cent merino wool, water repellent and, because it breathes the perfect jacket to wear in changing conditions. I used it on safari in Kenya last month and really appreciated the fact that it had so many pockets with zips to hide camera gear, wallets and notebooks. The jacket stretches with your body so you always feel comfortable, never restrained by the design.

Innova Spinner

Price: Range from $349-$549, Stockists: samsoniteaustralia.com

The Inova Spinner from Samsonite is a big suitcase, but surprisingly lightweight. Its four spinning wheels make it easy to manoeuvre in any situation. The T-bar handle is strong and when you pull the case it spreads the weight evenly.

The 75-litre case, in brushed silver, I tested weighed only 4.3kg, leaving plenty of room for clothes and gifts. It also survived a long flight and four lots of baggage handlers without getting too many scratches.

Campervan tent

Price: $616, Stockists: isgift.com

You will never have trouble finding your tent again. This is a full-scale replica of the 1965 VW Camper Van and it can be divided into two rooms (sleeps four). You can stand up in it and a 300cm x 100cm waterproof groundsheet is sewn into the inside of the tent. It is available in blue and green now and is coming in red soon.

– Budget earphones

Price: $29.99, Stockists: Myer and Rebel Sport

Yurbuds are guaranteed to never fall out. That’s something I couldn’t resist putting to the test and amazingly the twist-lock technology passed with flying colours. The sound quality is good, making these the perfect partner for someone with an active life.

– Mid-range

Price: $129.95, Stockist: sony.com.au

Sony’s XBA-S65 Balanced Armature headphones are perfect when you are hitting the hotel gym. They are sweat-proof and the loop design goes over your ears to hold the headphones in place. The sound quality concentrates on the vocals rather than the bass so everything sounds really bright.

– Luxury

Price: $195, Stockist: beoplay.com

The Form 2 headphones from Bang & Olufsen make even your bad songs sound good. They come in five colours (black, white, red, orange and yellow) and weigh just 86g. The sound is clear at low volume and bass is dynamic if you choose to pump it up. The earpads swivel to suit your head.
